I often tell people who want to go into web 2.0 that one should be fast and nimble, given the last dot com boom ended in a bust. This article from New York Magazine entitled Web Bubble 2.0 may offer some perspective for those who are moving into this space.

The first Facebook Developer Garage meeting has finally happened in Asia, and Singapore is proud to be the first country in Asia to host this event. We know that Facebook will be making some big announcements soon. The E27 team has put together an interesting conference for those who are interested in developing applications for Facebook. Of course, the event was followed by a hackathon at the Garag3. In this post, we review the presentation by two young speakers, (i) Trey Phillips, the winner of Facebook F8 Hackathon in Silicon Valley, Palo Alto and coincidentally, he is here in NUS for a student exchange (so Singapore is attracting cool programmers too these days) and (ii) Leonard Lin, founder of Tyler Projects and he has the honour to develop Singapore’s first Facebook MMORPG application: BattleStations. The competition was very well-organized and professional, reminiscent of the Peking University and MIT business plan competitions that are held strictly for students, staff and alumni within the university. Of course, every time when I turned up as a judge for the local business plan competitions in NUS, NTU and Insead, I learned something new. Here are the three interesting lessions (plus some of my counter-intuitive thoughts about what could have been done): (i) You should focus on what the position of your company product is the strongest, (ii) There is a distinction between “must have” and “will be good to have” and (iii) Please don’t take the investors as fools by showing us you can break even within a year. In a three part series, I will focus on the first point about core competency using a hypothetical idea. Read more
