World’s first Groupon retail shop to launch in Singapore
June 21, 2012 by Terence LEE
Groupon has today announced the official launch of the world’s first and only Groupon Shop, which will happen on 4th July.
The store had actually opened its doors on 30th April, according to ZDNet. It consists of three terminals where visitors can buy and redeem coupons on-the-spot.
Karl Chong, CEO of Groupon Singapore, told ZDNet that the objective of the opening ”was to make it more convenient for Groupon customers to redeem their products.”
The shop is located in Suntec City mall in Singapore.
Karl and Adrian Tan, the company’s COO, will be making an appearance at the launch event.
Groupon Singapore started life as Beeconomic in 2010, and was soon acquired by the daily deals leader in the same year. Like all other Groupon clones that were bought over, it soon went through a rebranding exercise.
It’ll be interesting to see how Groupon’s decision to start a physical presence will gel with its business model. It comes at the tail end of a long string of major Internet or technology company that have jumped into retail.
Apple introduced the Apple Store in the United States in 2001, while Google debuted Chrome Zone in London in 2011.
