Path rolls out seven new languages including Thai and Bahasa Indonesia

June 29, 2012 by

Recognizing the importance language has in building and maintaining relationships, Path, a mobile-centric social network app, recently rolled out seven new languages: Dutch, Norwegian, Traditional Chinese, Thai, Bahasa Indonesian, Malay, and UK English. This adds on to the nine that are currently available: Spanish, Italian, German, Portuguese, French, Swedish, Simplified Chinese, Japanese, and Korean.

This move will serve Path well in broadening its appeal to the global audience who speaks a vast multitude of languages. It understands that people use different languages to interact and engage with different social circles, and hopes that this support for new languages will encourage potential users to choose Path as their mobile social network of choice.

Path explains in a blog post:

At Path, we talk a lot about the home. Home is where your family and close friends gather to spend time together, to laugh, to play, to relax. And while some of you may speak one language away from home, you may speak a different or even native language in it. That’s why we want to make it possible to use Path in the language most comfortable for you.

Interestingly, more than half of the new language featured are Asian, signaling Path’s move to tap into and deepen its presence in the continent. Path recognizes that the number of smartphone users in Asian countries is rising at an exponential rate, and believes that introducing more Asian languages will solidify and strengthen Path’s position in the Asian markets.

Likewise, South Korean app Between, a popular private social network which caters to couples, is in the midst of adding four more languages.  It originally supported English, Korean, Japanese and Chinese, before introducing five more on its public launch in 7th March 2012. Between hopes that adding another four languages will help it reach 70 percent of the world population. Already, Between has achieved more than 800,000 downloads and attained 412,000 monthly active users, who contribute 4.5M messages and upload 350,000 photos a day.
