Failstock – 1 Day Of Ideas & Cross-Pollination

August 13, 2012 by

This Saturday, on the 18th of August 2012, a bunch of folks will be gathering at the National Youth Council Building for an un-conference to discuss a topic that’s more taboo than sex in Singapore society.

It’s about Failure.

If you have a thought-provoking, fresh, or radical idea on failure, join us! We’d love for you to participate in – or better still – lead a discussion on it.

The un-conference will be divided into AM and PM sessions, which you can choose from, with a common lunch break in between. If you would like to join us, let us know. Since we are keeping the group small, spots will be confirmed via email.

We already have three topics for the breakout sessions:

1. How do organizations and groups (as opposed to individuals) cope with failure, and how do we make them better at coping with failure?

2. How do Taibi Kahler’s drivers relate to failure?

3. Them mistakes: Why is it so dang difficult to internalise and learn from them? (AKA: why do smart people keep making stupid mistakes)

Come make this epic #fail unconference, well, epic!

1000 – 1230 AM unconference breakouts + large group sharing
1230 – 1330 Cross-pollination lunch for both AM & PM sessions
1330 – 1600 PM unconference (same format as AM)

Founders in the Bay by Battle Ventures

June 13, 2012 by

There are 4 slots left for Battle Ventures’ Founders in the Bay!

Organized by Battle Ventures, Founders in the Bay (#FIB2012) is an invite-only immersion program for Singapore-based technology startup founders to learn about the burgeoning technology market that is Silicon Valley. The program is conducted over 2 trips (approximately 10-12 days per trip) with the sole mission of making friends, collecting feedback on their products and exploring cross-border market entry opportunities in the US. The result: a lifelong bond with fellow founders on the trip, a wealth of new friends and business contacts in the Bay Area, a stronger appreciation for the cultural and economic ties that bind us globally, and hopefully successful commercial and/or fund raising leads.

A travel stipend will be awarded to each founder selected, they are only picking up to 12 founders per program (maximum).

[UP Singapore] How can we create a network of shared co-working spaces

June 13, 2012 by

Singapore is consistently being ranked as one of the easiest places in to do business. And, as a result, new businesses have been sprouting up in recent years. But let’s face it – no office space is flexible enough to meet the constantly changing needs of a company. Many business do not need a fixed office space all the time, and many other have an extra desk or room at times.

How can we create a network of efficiently managed co-working spaces, so that every office can become a co-working space?

Do read more about the challenge we posted on Do Good CoLAB for the Urban Prototyping Weekend during UP Singapore.

Participate and help us to solve this challenge by posting suggestions and comments.

There are also other challenges that might interest you over at Do Good CoLAB. Do check them out and share your ideas!

UP Singapore – Improving our urban environments through technology and data

May 9, 2012 by

Over the past couple of months, in the Singapore entrepreneurship and tech startup space, there have been activities and buzz around Big Data, Cross Pollination among different groups of creatives and hackathons. UP Singapore is an event trying to bring all three movements together.

This June, over a two-week period, UP Singapore, through a unique series of exhibitions, lectures, workshops and ‘Urban Prototyping’ hackathons, aims to bring together the brightest thinkers, entrepreneurs, researchers, government employees, and engaged citizens in Singapore. Together, with a selection of global innovators, the goal is to collaborate and create innovative solutions that will make our cities smarter, more efficient and simply better places to call home.

If you are an individual interested in Big Data, this would be the perfect chance to get access to previously unavailable datasets that will be shared by data partners from both the public and private sectors into the UP Singapore “data sandbox”.

This would also be the perfect chance to meet like-minded individuals across a range of disciplines and put your collective skills together to create interesting solutions in the following areas of interest:

  • Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability (LOHAS)
  • Tourism
  • Creative Arts
  • Education
  • Community Engagement

UP Singapore is looking to engage with data analysts, programmers, artists, graphic designers, financiers, academics, students, CEOs, NGOs, urbanists, architects, doctors, entrepreneurs, social workers and anyone else who has the ideas, vision or desire to improve our cities.

UP Singapore will culminate at the 2012 World Cities Summit in Singapore. Leading projects from the weekends will be selected through “crowd voting” and showcased in partnership with Singapore’s Economic Development Board (EDB) and the “Data-Centric City for the Future” Pavilion. These projects will also be candidates for further development and fundraising of up to S$250,000.

Spaces in this event are limited, so do pre-register for the event on the UP Singapore website.

Starters – A monthly Social Entrepreneurs & Change Makers Mixer

March 25, 2012 by

Starters is new monthly mixer specially catered to social entrepreneurs and change makers! Its not just about talking anymore, its about standing up, going out and taking action.

Put together by the crazy team behind Start Now Volunteerism Advocacy, Starters aims to bring people from all walks of life together to make social change that lasts. We firmly believe that each and everyone one of us has a desire to change something for the better.

But that’s sometimes hard if you are just one person against the world so we want to bring like minded people together and empower you to do something – in the spirit of “start now”!

We plan our events differently!

  1. We kick off the night with the niceties and some drinks before
  2. Jumping straight into “power session” – sharing by anyone in the audience.
  3. Introducing for the first time ever – the “Starters Board” – a pledge board where every participant can pledge different ways they can help any of the speakers – whether by introducing contacts, joining their team, or helping out with a project. This will then be emailed to all of the attendees!

So join us as we kick off the first Starters this March, 28th at 7pm Ice Cold Beer. Special Happy Hour just for us whole night long so no more excuses cause its time to start.

Confirmed Speakers:

  1. James Norris – Founder of Self Spark
  2. Eleanor Yap – Editor of SALT, Humaneity, Ageless Online
  3. Seamus Yeo – Team Singapura Everest
  4. Zhihan – Bagosphere
