5 Reasons Why You Should Start A Blog Before Doing A Startup

Undecided whether you should follow the blogging trend? Or have you already blindly jumped onto the blogging bandwagon but unsure as to why you should continue? Read on for some tips from our resident contributor, Aaron Chua.

Aaron writes:

Here is what I always tell first time entrepreneurs: start a blog in your area first and aim to attract x number of readers before attempting the startup. To me, blogging is the best way to test your idea as well as is the ideal training ground for your subsequent entrepreneurial journey. Here are five reasons why:

Blogging tests your commitment and fosters discipline

If you want to attract a certain number of readers, you will discover that daily blogging is almost a must. This is where you will know whether you have the necessary discipline to sit down and do the hard work of writing every night. This is where you will stop dreaming about success and start doing real work. If you find that you don’t have the passion or motivation to write every day about your startup area, you are probably not suited as an entrepreneur or your current idea isn’t right for you.

Blogging forces you to gain domain expertise

The most successful blogger picks a niche and dominates that. You will find that to be successful, you really need to be the best in your niche. This means every blog post must be thoroughly researched on. You will start to read books, hunt down relevant blogs, join discussions etc. You will gain more domain expertise through blogging about your startup area.

Blogging forces you to be customer centric from day one

It is easy to talk about being customer centric than to actually live like one. Blogging forces you to think about what your readers really want. It puts you in their perspective. Practice enough of this and thinking from the other side becomes natural. Blogging also forces you to be value adding. You can’t just write nonsensical posts and hope to attract an audience. You will need to be mindful of how your posts add value and that mindset will go a long way in helping you build a better product in the future.

Blogging teaches you about how online marketing works

In order to reach your target of X readers, you will begin to think about reaching your potential audience. You might start off with blatant advertising but you will soon discover that it is not sustainable. You will need to start reaching out to online conversations and add value to them. That is where real marketing begins. You will soon learn of the importance of linking, retweeting, aggregating etc that will be useful to you when you want to market your actual product.

Blogging builds your connections

Through blogging, you will earn new connections. Some of them can be your first customers . Some can be your most vocal supporters, helping you to spread your product around if it is good. Others might give you new ideas or perspectives or connect you to other important people. These connections will be better than any promotion or advertising dollars can bring.

So, if you are a first time entrepreneur, do start a blog first. It is the cheapest test bed for your business. If you cannot make a blog work, you probably cannot make your startup work as well. Have fun blogging!

  • Hey Aaron,

thanks for the great post. I've just written an article that takes this from another angle: Why you should found a company WITH a blogger. You can check it out at http://thezukunft.com.

Interestingly, we have opposite opinions on the domain knowledge thing. I think that what makes a blogger valuable is his broad interest, while you said that bloggers build up a strong domain knowledge. Why do you think a blogger needs to have strong domain knowledge to be successful?

  • I think it's great advice for start-up companies to start a blog. You make very good points, and the only thing I would disagree with is that they should do it before launching their start-up. If they happen to do it before great, but don't hold off on the start-up waiting for the blog to become a success because that may never happen. A blog is a great advertising resource and it goes hand in hand with the start-up company, so one without the other is less effective.

Partial agreement on the points here. But starting a blog while you start a business or before is always a good idea. It's never too late.
  • It's quite true that one can get important "market feedback" and potential supporter of your startup product from blogging. However it is not easy to maintain a sucessful blog, especially the entrepreneur has to deal with so many things in his/her fledging business. Hence perhaps one should start blogging early ?
  • Thanks for your sharing. This information is very useful for our future
Start from now I will do blogging to make more connection with other people
  • But most of the time, many entrepreneurs do get discouraged by all the technical issues of starting a blog and writing skills. Also, there are times when writing base on the startup area may leak potential ideas that protect the startup's unique selling point.
  • Hi guys,

    Thanks for your comments.

I wrote this post in recognition of how much I have gained by blogging. It is truly difficult to start a blog that attracts, say 500 readers a day. It is however, more difficult to create a startup that has 500 customers per day.

#Parka, #Hun Boon: You guys got the point right in that a startup demands so much more than a blog. My argument is exactly this. If you can't 'test' run your determination and idea by creating a successful blog based on your startup area, the chances of you succeeding at a startup will be much less.

  • Hey Aaron, as a blogger and entrepreneur myself, I have to agree that one should blog about their startup and operation ideas to help them focus on the right things as mentioned in your blog post.

I would like to add that by blogging before launching your startup, you can slowly attract an audience and start making them excited about your startup. Once the relationship is being built, it is more than likely that they will tell friends about your upcoming startup. Thus, a startup launch will be way successful if an entrepreneur chooses to start a blog prior to the launch.

  • Hi, I find these points to be valid. It would be a helpful exercise to start a blog first, especially for an online business.

However I would caution that there are many difficulties in running a start-up, which writing a blog would not prepare a person for.

Likewise, don't be discouraged if your blog doesn't work out for some reason. After all, many businesses are still conducting the majority of their activities offline.
  • A startup and a blog is vastly different. A startup's purpose is to make money, unlike a blog. That being said, a startup when created requires more discipline, much more than a blog which can be deleted effortlessly with a single click. Yes, blogger can help entrepreneurs be more knowledgeable about online marketing and technology. But one has to know why the goal of doing so in the first place.

Don't think that blogging success contributes to all kinds of trade. Unless your startup is of a new innovation / idea, probably blogging serves as a platform to test the market and to arouse interest.

My next question would be , how do you get your blog to be noticed?
