Great list. Thanks. There are always new ones, but it’s hard to tell which ones will be around a few years out.

The problem with the folks like Google & Yahoo is that they have created many tools which have been loosely coupled. The challenge with such a solution is that the the information gets locked into multiple silos. With Google Wave they are trying to integrate all the conversations (discussions) but what would be truly desirable is a platform built form ground up using social networking at the base and business apps on top of it. I have tried Injoos Teamware (www.injoos.com) and found it captures both informal and formal knowledge like documents in one single workspace on the cloud.

Wonder if startups really need these overhyped stuffs.

It's all about saving every single penny & bootstrapping.

1) Google Wave - Little chance of a startup getting an invite because they would not fully utilise it, compared to a bigger company where PR is way more important and should be catered to.

2) Yammer - What the hell? I need to pay for this piece of crap? We're talking bout startups here. I can easily make a wordpress blog that can have a twitter design with a micro blogging function and put it to PRIVATE and easily share on wordpress. <<< FOR FREE.

Free advice from a startup -

1) I want to save money. I can collaborate with my team way cheaper than this and also produce the same functionality that these provide.

2) I want maximum exposure for the little pennies that I fork out - Press Release Sites, Commenting on other blogs. Just do a google search on something and a lot of Press Release Sites will give them. And it's free.

3) All I ever want as a startup is something that will lower my cost and increase my profits. Anything other than that is just a no-no.
