Start-Up@Singapore

Yesterday, the results of the 7th Start-Up@Singapore finals were finally out. Here is a short commentary and thoughts after the event that happened yesterday (3 June 2006) at Raffles City Convention Centre, Swissotel Level 4, Atrium Ballroom.

tenCube, led by their CEO, Darius Cheung (also in our SG Entrepreneurs team), has won the general category and also the Lenovo Technological Invention Award with his business idea.

A quick summary of their idea: tenCube WaveSecure is the world’s most comprehensive solution to help you secure your mobile device and data. With WaveSecure, you can remotely lock your phone and track it down even if the SIM card is replaced. It enables you to recover your lost phone, prevent expensive unauthorized calls and protect private data. Your valuable data, such as contacts, will be securely backed up on a web server such that you can access it from anywhere anytime, even if your phone was destroyed in a fire. WaveSecure will be available commercially from Q4 06.

For youth category, Hydrogene from Hwa Chong Institution took the champions, followed by DySmart and zigAlive. RNA Therapeutics won the TEC Innovation for Public Sector Award. The first runners and second runners-up for the general category are ND Arrays and Voltedge respectively.

Of course, at the end of the day, a win in the business plan competition does not signify the success of the business. I agree with the judging advisor, Douglas Abrams’ comment that there are no losers in this competition, only winners and learners.

Authors’ Note: The SG Entrepreneurs team congratulate Darius on winning the competition and wish him luck in future endeavours with his startup, tenCube.

A hearty congratulations to Darius! Ha! I didn’t need to be at the competition to recognise that Darius’s idea was a good one when I see one! :)

Well, Cobalt, you are right about that. Anyway, I manage to catch Darius and get him to agree in submitting his virgin entry soon this week after celebrating his win. Btw, Weichang is also there yesterday.

[…] Business plan competitions have been pretty big recently. I like to congratulate the winners and this post is in no way demeaning their hard work and excellent ideas. That being said I am pretty skeptical about such business plan competitions, entrepreneurship grants, and even venture capital seeds. […]
