In conjunction with the 50th anniversary celebrations of the NUS Faculty of Law, NUS Law is proud to bring you the first ever symposium on Entrepreneurship and the Law. The symposium will bring together four distinguished experts to speak on the legal aspects of entrepreneurship, and how the law, lawyers and law schools can play their role in fostering the entrepreneurial spirit. - About the speakers:
Gerald Singham is a partner at Rodyk & Davidson’s Corporate Practice Group. He has worked extensively with local and multinational companies in providing corporate counselling for a variety of industries. He also leads the firm’s Technopreneurship Advisory Group which advises clients like Entrepreneurial and Emerging Companies, Venture Capitalists and Business Angels on the legal aspects of their corporate and commercial activities. Gerald will speak on the corporate aspects of hauling an idea out of the garage into an up-and-running business. He will also explore issues such as the entrepreneur’s freedom to pursue an opportunity followed by the preferred choice of entity and the amount of control s/he wishes to retain, as well as concerns such as directors’ fiduciary duties and dealing with venture capitalists.
Max Ng ‘95 is a Director of Gateway Law Corporation and Ella Cheong Spruson & Ferguson. Max was listed as a leading lawyer in Intellectual Property in AsiaLaw Leading Lawyers and is also the lead author of the book “Intellectual Propertyâ€, of the Butterworths Law for Business Series. Max will speak on legal issues that are pertinent to any entrepreneur – Intellectual Property (IP) and Litigation. In particular, he will discuss the ramifications of building and protecting IP in the context of starting a business in today’s global economy. Max will also discuss conflict management during the start-up’s life-span and explore the roles of litigation and alternative dispute resolution mechanisms.
Wong Taur-Jiun ‘92 is Regional Counsel at McAfee, a systems security software company. He has been in practice, in-house and in school for an MBA since graduating from NUS Law in 1992. Taur-Jiun maintains a soft spot for start-ups in Singapore, and has on occasion worked on projects with the NUS Business School, NUS INTRO and NUS Entrepreneurship Center. He will speak on challenges facing startups such as securing and maintaining funding, particularly for processes such as buying, procurement, licensing, selling, partnering, employment and the ever-critical issue of attracting venture capitalists’ funding.
Seow Jia Xian ‘06 was the first law student to enroll in the NUS Overseas Colleges (NOC) Programme. She worked at the Science Center in Philadelphia, a non-profit venture accelerator home to over 150 start-ups, and also attended lessons in entrepreneurship at the Schools of Law and Engineering in the University of Pennsylvania. Jia Xian has recently commenced her pupilage at Rodyk & Davidson and is aspiring towards a practice dedicated to entrepreneurship in Singapore. She will share her experience at UPenn and elaborate on insights gained in the Legal Entrepreneurship course at UPenn Law, convened by partners of the law firm, Morgan, Lewis & Bockius. She will offer suggestions on how a similar course might be mounted at NUS Law.
