Events@SIT from Republic Poly: 2 Talks on Google and Silicon Valley

From the School of Information & Communications Technology in Republic Polytechnic, EVENTS@SIT will feature two interesting talks: “Silicon Valley Scene: Why and How Does It Work, When it Does” by Dr John Mashey and “The Google Game: How Maps, Media and Mobility Are Changing Mass Marketing For Ever” by Dr Angela Hey. Here are more details about both talks.

  • Title of 1st talk : The Google Game: How Maps, Media and Mobility Are Changing Mass Marketing For Ever 
    • Date : 20th November 2007
    • Speaker : Dr Angela Hey
    • Time: 5.30 – 6.30 pm
    • Venue: Asian Civilization Museum Ngee Ann Auditorium
    • Bio-Data: The speaker is Angela Hey, PhD, founder of a Silicon Valley technology marketing firm, Techviser. She brings experience in wireless equipment, mobile devices, document management and enterprise software ventures. She is also the technology reporter for the Mountain View Voice. Her career began at Bell Laboratories and AT&T, where she pioneered UNIX software marketing and helped telecommunications companies standardize interfaces between operations systems in telecommunications companies. She has degrees in engineering, management, computer science and mathematics from Imperial College (London), University of Waterloo and University of Cambridge.
  • Title of 2nd Talk: Silicon Valley Scene: Why and How Does It Work, When it Does
    • Speaker: Dr John Mashey
    • Date: 22nd November 2007

    • Bio-Data: John Mashey has worked for 3 venture-funded companies, has helped several others get funded, frequently consults for venture capitalists, and sits on technology advisory boards for a handful of startups. He is “an ancient UNIX person,” having started work on it at Bell Labs in 1973, and continuing to work there for 10 years. He moved to Silicon Valley in 1983 to join Convergent Technologies, ending as director of software. Mashey joined MIPS Computer Systems in early 1985, managing operating systems development, and helping design the MIPS RISC architecture, as well as specific CPUs, systems and software. He continued similar work at SGI (1992 –2000) most recently contributing to the design of SGI’s NUMAflex modular computer architecture, ending as VP and Chief Scientist. He has given more than 500 public talks on software engineering, RISC design, performance benchmarking and supercomputing. He holds a PhD Computer Science from the Pennsylvania State University.
