Live Blogging from PHP User Group Dec 2007 Meetup

We are now at the Singapore PHP User Group Dec 2007 meetup in NUS Extension. We are live-blogging and following the 2nd session of the PHP 101 track. The title of the talk is entitled “PHP and Zend Technologies in the Enterprise”. The speaker is Rama Yurindra from Zend Team Indonesia, who is here to share with us how Zend can adopt PHP for enterprise issues.

9:30 pm: Rama Yurindra, Zend Team Indonesia, introduced himself and explained why he is here in Singapore. He found the Singapore PHP User Group through a google and discovered that there is a community of PHP developers in Singapore.

Next, he moved onto what Zend is about. In his words, the vision of Zend is to be like what Sun is for Java. He introduced the history that tracked the history of PHP: PHP is first introduced by Rasmus Lerdoff, and subsequently Zeev Suraski and Andi Gutmas who folowed and led the deveopment of PHP3 and subsquently and move towards the creation of ZEND. The next slide is about what Zend is about. Rama remarked that if you are using PHP 4 or 5, you are already a Zend customer. Next, we are introduced to the international strategic partners for Zend and that include IBM, Oracle, Microsoft, Intel and SP.

9:40 pm: He has now asked the audience what they are doing with PHP. The interesting bit is that most users are CMS users. Rama offered some known examples of PHP usage: Wordpress and Flickr. Now his slide turns to “Why PHP?”. The reasons he offered are the following: (i) Low learning curve that leads to rapid development, (ii) Easy integration into hetergeneous environment and a robust multi-platform that is secure, high-performance and scalable and lead to agile business development, and finally (iii) vibrant economy that leads to proven deployment.

9:45 pm We are now led into the enterprise issue. The following questions are posed by Rama:

  • - What do you do when your application is performing slowly?
  • - Can you ensure a reliable service?
  • - Can your business scale?
  • - Is integration easy to do today? The aim is to integrate PHP with any kind of software.

Next Rama introduced Zend products and services. The first one on the list is the Zend Core for i5/OS which can be deployed in Windows, Linux, Mac OSX and many operating systems. The next free product from Zend is the Zend Studio for i5/OS, that provides an integrated IDE for building and debugging PHP applications. How about support? Of course, the Zend support, Zend Platform (a robust PHP production environment providing performance, scalability and monitoring of PHP applications), Zend Guard (provides code protection and license management tools for solution providers) and Services (Teaching and Pro-Service) are all chargeable.

A question is posed from the audience on whether the Zend studio can allow integration with other programming languages such as Java. Rama answered that the other programming languages can integrated with the PHP.

Now, he showed a diagram which showcased the structure of the Zend World (Need a picture - will come back on that later).

This is followed by a demo of the Zend Core for Oracle. It’s similar to how people install PHP in LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP), MAMP (Mac OS X) and WAMP (Windows).

10 pm: We come to the end of the presentation.
