Wake Up And Smell The Coffee

If you’ve watched Blood Diamond, then you know the exploitation that goes on in the diamond industry. But this is hardly unique. Commodities like fresh fruit, tea, sugar, cocoa and coffee are just some of the other industries plagued by marginalization and exploitation. This is where Fair Trade comes into play.

A fairly new concept in Asia, Fair Trade is a social movement that aims to advance justice and sustainability in trade practices. The objective of this event is to create a sense of awareness among the general public with regards to fair trade products and how consumers can effect change in the global market by being conscious about their rights and power as end consumers.

At the event, we will explore the meaning and connection each individual have with their daily dose of coffee. On top of that, we will be screening an Award winning documentary “Black Gold”. Black Gold is a 2006 documentary film about the international coffee trade and its ramifications for the farmers who grow coffee. It was directed by two British brothers, Marc Francis and Nick Francis.

With this event, we hope our audience can bring away knowledge and awareness of things happening around the world especially in developing countries, a greater sense of mindfulness in the way they lead their lives and definitely new friends who are attracted to make a difference in this world.

For social entrepreneurs who would like to take action and promote fair trade products, this will be a great meeting place for like-minded individuals.
