I have specifically said that it is an existing concept that has been popular in the UK, US and Australia which I felt has great potential in Asia. Thus, my husband and I decided to bring the concept into Singapore. FYI, the company that appears to be the first to use the lunch dating concept is ‘LunchDates’ which was started in 1982. And usually only 3 people who would do anything about it, and at the end only 1 who would succeed. So, I am not surprised that when we submitted our ‘eureka moment’, someone else has a similar idea.

Dear Adam,

Thank you for your comments and feedback. I always welcome feedback as it helps us to continuously improve.

I would like to address your points of concern. With regards to the concept of lunch dating, I have never claimed that I am the creator. In all my media interviews since our inception in 2004, I have specifically said that it is an existing concept that has been popular in the UK, US and Australia which I felt has great potential in Asia. Thus, my husband and I decided to bring the concept into Singapore. FYI, the company that appears to be the first to use the lunch dating concept is ‘LunchDates’ which was started in 1982.

With regards to Eteract.com, you could be of the impression that we ‘copied’ the idea. To clarify, we have actually submitted our idea and proposal of online speed dating to the Partner Connection Fund administered by MCYS (Ministry of Community Development, Youth & Sports) in December 2006 which is way before the launch of online speed dating sites like woome.com or speedddate.com in late 2007.

Most entrepreneurs would know that when they come up with a great idea, there would be at least 10 other people out there who has the same idea. And usually only 3 people who would do anything about it, and at the end only 1 who would succeed. So, I am not surprised that when we submitted our ‘eureka moment’, someone else has a similar idea. Hence, many a times, it is not about the idea, but the execution and the go to market strategy that matters.

Everybody is entitled to their personal opinions and I am sure the editors at SGEntrepreneurs too appreciate your contribution to make the site more vibrant and interactive. In future, you might want to check your facts before attacking the writer’s and site owner’s integrity.

Thank you.

Sincerely,
Violet Lim

I think what you have forgotten to ask the interviewee above is whether she has been going around copying ideas that she later "claimed" to be hers. If you have done your homework diligently, you'll find that her "lunch date" concept and her so called "speed dating online" eureka moment are all ideas that she did not come up with on her own, even though she claimed it to be. What you're profiling are people who have no originality but give the impression they know what they're doing. You should be smarter in who you feature otherwise, you're just another mouthpiece that people will soon /igonore.
