SINGAPORE – September 26, 2007 — The Spirit of Enterprise tonight awarded its 2007 awards to 42 entrepreneurs picked from a pool of 156 nominees. Held at the Pan Pacific Hotel Ballroom, the event was graced by Mrs Yu-Foo Yee Shoon, Minister of State for Community Development, Youth and Sports as the guest of Honour. In attendance was a who’s who’s of luminary entrepreneurs from Singapore.
“Entrepreneurs inject dynamism and contribute significantly to our economy with their ability to innovate and seize opportunities. ” Said Mrs Yu-Foo Yee Shoon. She also added that. “It is the daring, perseverance and indomitable spirit of the winners that is being celebrated today. But in celebrating their success, we should also give recognition to their families and friends who provided them with love and support along the way.”
The Spirit of Enterprise (SOE) is a non-profit body that promotes and advances entrepreneurial spirit in Singapore. The body organizes an annual award ceremony to honour outstanding entrepreneurs who have been exemplary and successful in their careers. It seeks to inspire the entrepreneurial spirit in Singaporeans.
This year’s award ceremony was different as it was a star-studded event. A handful of entrepreneurs amongst the recipients are well-known in their fields of expertise. Honourees such as Geoff Ang of Geoff Studios, David Gan of Passion Hair Salon, Ted Ngo of Gallery Hotel have trail blazed their respective industries and made a name for themselves globally. Over 400 guests, friends and families of the honourees, attended the suit and tie invite-only event at the Pan Pacific Hotel to jointly celebrate the award ceremony. The guests were treated to a sumptuous dinner and performances by a special military band and a string quartet.
As noted by Mr Henry Tan, President of The Spirit of Enterprise, a greater number of honourees now hail from the lifestyle, services, food and beverage industries. This has been a shift away from manufacturing. The enterprises that we see today will be the brands of tomorrow that will service the consumers of the future. The SOE has come a long way since its inception in 2003 and is now present in USA, Mauritius and Vietnam.
Besides the main entrepreneur awards, various other awards were presented. SOE Patron, Mr Goh Kai Kui, presented the “Friends of Enterprise Award” to both Shell LiveWIRE and the Singapore Institute of Management.
“We share this Friends of Enterprise Award with our local partners, ITE, ITE AA and SPH Chinese Newspapers Division, who have helped Shell LiveWIRE to raise the awareness and basic proficiency of youth enterprise in Singapore. Spirit of Enterprise’s recognition of this Shell community project encourages us to continue to impart entrepreneurial skills among the youth today.” Said Ms Caroline Loke, Head Social Investment, Shell Companies in Singapore.
Mr Richard Eu, SOE Patron, then awarded prizes to the two best Student Interviewers: Mr Eu Xing Leong of the National University of Singapore and Ms Huixiang Chen of the Singapore Institute of Management.
Finally, towards the end of the awards dinner, Minister of State, Mrs Yu-Foo Yee Shoon and The SOE Patron and Founding President for Awards, Mr Russell Miller on stage, toasted the 42 recipients of this year’s awards.
The event ended with a special announcement and giveaway to all guests. The SOE’s Board of Governors would like to congratulate all honourees and announce its appreciation for all volunteers who have kindly assisted. The number of participating schools has increased from 7 to 10 demonstrating the stronger interest from schools to expose their students to entrepreneurial leaders. The 2008 awards will feature 43 entrepreneurs and will return once again to honour another batch of outstanding entrepreneurs.
