SiTF Awards 2009 Winners
September 27, 2009 by Gwendolyn Regina T

The Singapore infocomm Technology Federation (SiTF) concluded their 3rd run of the SiTF Awards. At the award ceremony on Friday, they announced and presented the awards to this year’s winners, who together with their fellow finalists, had to pitch their ideas over two rounds to panels of judges to be able to have earned the privilege to call themselves a finalist.
There were 7 categories in which participants could compete for an award, with a few of these categories specially sponsored by various organisations. Competition this year was strong, I can attest to that as I was a judge in the Start-Up Category and we judges took a long while during the deliberation process to finally recommend the 3 finalists to compete for the final award.
The grand winners of the SiTF Awards 2009 are (updated):
(1) Open Category (Sponsored by Hewlett-Packard Singapore):
Winner: PGK Media Pte Ltd – ADMe Network & Wish Singapore
(PGK Media won last year too.)
ADMe allows you to send a video dedication, a picture snapped from your cellphone or a 3G video clip to giant digital video walls from anywhere in the world. It is an advanced user-centric content delivery platform.
One of their latest and biggest projects include Wish Singapore, the world’s first and largest giant digital wall, during Singapore’s National Day Parade this year.
(2) Infocomm Local Enterprise (iLE) Category:
Winner: KAI Square Pte Ltd – Juzz4Logistics
Juzz4Logistics is a turnkey solution (consisting of both software and hardware) that caters to real-time surveillance needs in the logistics and transportation industries. This service used mobile internet 3G/Wimax technology to help fleet operators better manage their fleet of vehicles through the use of realtime information transfer. They key functions include viewing live surveillance videos, playing back of recorded videos, tracking vehicles’ movement and location and emergency message broadcasting.
Merit: Quantum Inventions Pte Ltd – Traffic Information Platform (TRIP) & QI Navigator
Quantum Inventions, in collaboration with the Land Transport Authority (LTA), has developed the Singapore Traffic Information Platform (TRIP) that delivers real-time traffic information in standards-compliant, machine-interoperable formats over wired or wireless media (GPRS, 3G, Radio, Internet, etc.) to devices and systems for consumers, enterprises and government.
QI Navigator accesses real-time information (traffic, weather, parking, etc.) from TRIP over the air and combines it with on-board traffic-aware routing (fastest and cheapest) to deliver context sensitive inputs and next-generation navigation features to motorists.
(3) Start-Up Category:
Winner: XMI Pte Ltd – X-Mini II
(XMI won last year too.)

Sound Beyond Size. The “X-Mini” is the world’s first pocket size speaker with built-in bass support and rechargeable battery. Pioneering a patented technology, the X-mini can be extended upwards like an accordion. It is this expandable vacuum which mimics the resonance of a sub-woofer that gives the X-mini a crisp and full-bodied sound and volume.
(4) Secondary Student Category (Sponsored by Excom Education):
Merit: Raffles Institution – Digital Wave
(Raffles Institution won last year too.)
Digital Wave is aims to teach the basic principles of design and animation through a web-based platform designed by youths for youths. Digital Wave introduces users to basic digital content creation tools and gives them a head start in creative digital content creation. The materials starts from a simple custom built applet and moves on to industry standards such as Adobe Photoshop and Flash.
Merit: River Valley High School – Mixed Reality Campuses
Throughout the past few decades, River Valley High School has shifted campuses and seen a total of seven locations. Using composites of 3D photography and adding 3D modelling, still pictures can be modified to look like 3D images and also be edited to include future developments to the school campus. This thus captures how past campuses looked and how the future permanent one will look.
(5) Tertiary Student Category (Sponsored by Excom Education):
Winner: Temasek Polytechnic – Smart Shop
Using Augmented Reality, Smart Shop enables consumers to have a real and accurate sense of the products they are seeking to purchase online, by allowing online shoppers to view the product from different angles and distances as if the product is physically in front of them. So online shoppers can now “try out” clothing on themselves using a normal webcam.
Merit: Nanyang Technological University of Singapore – Hibernater
(NTU won in 2007 too.)
Hibernater allows you to save and resume the working states of your computer at another computer. Users can save the documents and web address that they are working on and have them automatically launch on another computer.
(6) Government Category (Sponsored by IBM Software Group, Singapore):
Winner: Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) Singapore – Integrated Visitor Management Programme
The Integrated Visitor Management Programme moves immigration services out of the mainframe platform and delivers them online. Implementation of the programme creates cost savings and cost avoidance of up to $2 million per year for the government.
Merit: Health Promotion Board – Engaging Individuals for Better Health
To reduce the prevalence of chronic diseases amongst Singaporeans and to reach a larger proportion of the various target groups, HPB has leveraged on technology to introduce the following solutions: Health Promotion Portal, Singapore eHealth Portal, Toll-free mobile internet content and Geographic Information Software (GIS).
(7) Private Category (Sponsored by F5 Networks Pte Ltd):
Merit: Institute of Mental Health – ROC-N-ASH
ROC-N-ASH is a web portal designed by mental health professionals from the Child Guidance Clinic and dedicated to Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and childhood anxiety. Existing therapy programmes can be supplemented by the role-playing fantasy-themed games that aims tohelp the young with ADHD and literacy difficulties discover ways to concentrate better and be less impulsive.
Out of the list, 4 are repeat winners – PGK Media, XMI, Raffles Institution and Nanyang Technological University.
What is interesting is that amongst the entire list of finalists, several (Human Network Labs, Phokki, RedNano) were funded by the Interactive Digital Media Programme Office (IDMPO) and this includes some of the winners as well: PGK Media, KAI Square, Hibernater. This means that excluding the Government category, one third of the finalists were funded by IDMPO.
