Google to hire around 100 in Southeast Asia

Following the announcement that Google will be opening a new office in Bangkok, Julian Persaud, the managing director for Google in Southeast Asia, has told Dow Jones in an interview that they will be hiring around 100 new staff in Southeast Asia, and 500 in Asia.

Persaud also said that Southeast Asia is currently the fastest growing market for the search giant. A major growth opportunity for them is helping to bring businesses online, perhaps through services like Google Docs.

“Southeast Asia is coming into prominence but not much of content about the region is available on the Internet. With over 120 million people online in the region, we are particularly excited about growth in the region,” said Persaud.

He has declined to give exact hiring details by country, except to highlight that Google employs about 250 people in Singapore and a “handful” in Malaysia and Thailand.

While Google believes in freedom of expression online, it will comply by local laws. Vietnam and Thailand, for instance, have tried to block Facebook and jail bloggers. Indonesia had in the past instructed Research in Motion to install anti-pornography filters in their Blackberry phones.
