Philippines Digest: Filipino inventor in Silicon Valley, THE BEST program, and more
October 31, 2011 by Egi SEPTIADI

Here are some startup news snippets from Philippines, not only in its capital, Manila, but also other startup hubs such as Cebu, General Santos City, Pasay, Quezon City, and many more.
(1) A Filipino inventor and alternative energy visionary is readying the presentation of his invention in the United States that will happen this December.
(2) THE BEST is an acronym of a program that was just recently organized and hosted by the Baguio City National High School. It stands for: Basic Entrepreneurial Skills Training Program. This project is one of the components of the Reach out Community Development: Care and Serve (Recode Case) Project, the flagship program of the Chamber of Young Entrepreneurs and Professionals (Society) of the Philippines (CYEPSPI).
(3) Maria Fe Perez-Agudo, president and chief executive of Hyundai Asia Resources Inc., was named the Woman Entrepreneur of the Year for her exemplary management of the company, now one of the major players in the local automotive industry.
(4) Multiply Philippines country manager Jack Madrid recalled that as the website started gaining popularity, some users were using it “in a different way” by creating web pages to sell their items online. And just like that, Multiply turned into the premier online shopping portal for Filipinos, so much so that Multiply Philippines just had to host a Shopping Party in Whitespace, Makati last week.
(5) Emerging franchise concepts and business trends suitable for aspiring entrepreneurs with minimal capital resources are the focus of this year’s Philippine SME and Franchise Expo (Philsme & Franchise Expo 2011).
(6) On 19th October at Chateau 1771, Bulletin Entertainment and select members of media met with budding host Patti Grandidge and talked about her show on ETC titled “ETCETERA” and, well, cupcakes. The easy-going teenager, after all, owns and manages Sweet Patti Cakes, a home-based business that sells, as many describe it, “heavenly” cupcakes.
