Another competitor to the much hyped-about Mocca, Inkiti comes on board to the online classifieds space, helmed by a French serial entrepreneur who recently moved to Singapore to continue his entrepreneurship journey despite having a PhD in Law. We learn about Louis’ experiences here and why he chose Singapore as his next startup breeding ground.

(Louis responded to the interview in his native French language and Gwen translated his responses into English.)

Gwen: Tell us your story. What is your background and what are you currently involved in?
Louis: J’ai 29 ans, je suis français et Docteur en droit (PhD in Law) spécialisé dans le droit de la publicité des entreprises sur l’Internet. S’agissant de l’Internet je suis autodidacte. J’ai créé ma 1ère entreprise en France, il y a 5 ans, dans le domaine de la comparaison des tarifs des billets d’avion. Je viens de créer une 2ème société ici à Singapour qui exploite le site Dailyfrenchpod et surtout Inkiti.com.

Translation: I’m 29 years old, French and have a PhD in Law where I specialize in the legal approach to online business promotion. As to the internet, I am self-taught. I created my first company in France five years ago in the domain of the comparison of plane ticket prices. I just created my second company here in Singapore which runs the sites Dailyfrenchpod.com and above all, Inkiti.com.

Gwen: You’ve gotten a PhD in Law, but now you’ve been starting your own businesses? How do the two aspects of your life add up?
Louis: Les études de droit donne une rigueur d’analyse et une capacité à appréhender des situations complexes. Cependant le travail du juriste différe fondamentalement de celui d’entrepeneur. En tant que juriste vous devez, pour vos clients, écarter les risques. Au contraire en tant qu’entrepreneur il faut savoir les prendre ! L’analyse juridique permet cependant de mieux mesurer ces risques.

Translation: The study of law bestows an analytical rigor and an ability to comprehend complex situations. Yet the work of a lawyer differs fundamentally from that of an entrepreneur. As a lawyer, you must avoid risks for your clients. On the contrary as an entrepreneur, it is important to take them! (The training of) legal analysis then allows one to better measure these risks.

Gwen: So how exactly has your entrepreneurship experience been? When did you start getting interested?
Louis: J’ai créé mon premier site internet en 1998 sur les récits de voyage, pour le plaisir. Deux ans après et plus de 2000 carnets de voyages publiés je me suis dit que je devais essayer d’en vivre. J’ai alors commencé à monétiser ce site par de simples publicités AdSense. Cela a bien marché mais s’est vite avéré assez limité. Une partie de ce site permettait la réservation de billets d’avion et c’est cette partie qui fonctionnait le mieux. J’ai donc décidé de monter ma société dans ce domaine précisément. J’ai alors lié un partenariat avec Kelkoo (le leader européen de la comparaison Shopping … racheté depuis par Yahoo) et me suis lancé dans la comparaison de tarifs aériens. Chaque année les bénéfices de ma société augmentaient de plus de 100%. Au bout de 4 ans j’ai revendu la plupart de ces sites pour me lancer dans une autre aventure.

Translation: I created my first internet site in 1998 for travel stories and photos just for fun. Two years later and more than 2000 travel logbooks published, I told myself that I should try to make it work for me. I then started monetizing the site with a simple system of ads, AdSense. This worked well but soon proved to be limited. A section of the site allowed the reservation of plane tickets and this was the section which functioned the best. I then decided to start my first company in this very field. So, I connected with a partner, Kelkoo (the European leader in comparison shopping…it has since been bought over by Yahoo) and delved into the comparison of plane ticket prices. Each year the earnings of my company increased more than 100%. After four years I sold most of these sites to enter into another endeavour.

Gwen: What is Inkiti?
Louis: Inkiti est un site ultra simple de publication de petites annonces locales et gratuites.

Translation: Inkiti is a very simple site for the free publication of local advertisements.

Gwen: What makes Inkiti different from other similar sites like Mocca, Olx and eFair?
Louis: Inkiti est différent de Mocca car aucun enregistrement n’est nécessaire sur Inkiti ! De plus la publication d’annonces y est beaucoup plus simple puisque 3 étapes suffisent (10 sur Mocca).

Inkiti est différent d’OLX car nous sommes dédiés à Singapour. De plus sur Inkiti vous pouvez localiser votre annonce grâce à l’intégration très facile de Google Maps.
Inkiti est différent d’efair car nous sommes spécialisés dans les annonces en ligne. Et j’espère que notre interface est plus agréable ;)

Translation: Inkiti is different from Mocca because no registration is necessary on Inkiti! Furthermore, the publication of ads there is much simpler since (only) 3 stages will suffice (10 in Mocca).

Inkiti is different from Olx because we are dedicated to the Singapore market. Furthermore on Inkiti, you can localize your ad thanks to the easy integration with Google Maps.

Inkiti is different from eFair because we are specializing in ads on line. And I hope that our interface is more appealing (than the rest) ;)

Gwen: What got you motivated to start Inkiti?
Louis: 2 constatations :
- à Singapour, le traffic généré par les petites annonces est beaucoup plus bas que dans le reste du monde.
- Mocca a pu s’installer comme le leader en 60 jours.
Cela veut dire une chose : le marché des petites nnonces va beaucoup grossir dans les mois à venir et les nouveaux acteurs ont toutes leurs chances.

Translation: 2 observations:
- in Singapore, the traffic generated by classifieds is much lower than that by the rest of the world.
- Mocca has become the leader in only 60 days.

This means one thing: the classifieds market will increase tremendously in the following months and new actors (in the industry) have all their chances (to make use of the opportunity).

Gwen: What were the initial challenges and difficulties that you faced as an entrepreneur?
Louis: Le temps. Réduire le temps entre l’idée et la réalisation. Construire Inkiti a pris du temps. Pourtant il faut sans cesse lutter pour que le délai d’éxécution soit le plus court possible.

Translation: Time. Reduce the time between the idea and its realization. Contructing Inkiti took time. Nevertheless, it is necessary to continually strive for the shortest possible delay in execution.

Gwen: As a serial entrepreneur (having also founded DailyFrenchPod.com), has it gotten any easier?
Louis: Non. Je ne pense pas qu’on apprenne beaucoup de ses erreurs passées. Chaque projet est si différent qu’il requiert toujours audace et initiative. L’expérience n’aide pas beaucoup dans ces domaines!

Translation: No. I do not think that one learns a lot from past errors. Each project is so different that it always requires courage and initiative. Experience doesn’t help much in these areas!

Gwen: I understand that you are currently bootstrapping the company, why that decision?
Louis: C’est la meilleure façon de débuter. Créer, proposer, améliorer. Si l’audience est là, alors on peut penser aux développements et investissements extérieurs.

Translation: It is the best way to start. Creating, proposing, improving. If the audience is there, then one can then think of (future) developments and (procuring) outside investments.

Gwen: You recently moved from your home country France to Singapore right? Why the uproot?
Louis: Oui, j’ai créé ma 1ère société en France et je suis venu créer ma 2ème à Singapour. Pourquoi ? L’environnement économique est bien meilleur, les opportunités plus grandes et l’entreprise plus encouragée et considérée. Voici un exemple frappant : en France, quand j’ai créé ma 1ère société, j’ai reçu un note à payer (des charges sociales) de 145 euros avant même d’avoir mon premier client (quelques jours seulement après la création) ! Ici à Singapour la pression fiscale des entreprises est beaucoup moins forte, ce qui encourage beaucoup plus l’initiative et la prise de risque.

Translation: Yes, I created my first startup in France and now I’ve come to create my second in Singapore. Why? The economic environment is much better, the opportunities bigger and entrepreneurship is more highly regarded and encouraged. Here is a salient example: in France, when I created my first company, I received a note payable (social security contributions) of 145 euros even before I got my first client (only a few days after the launch of the company)! Here in Singapore the financial pressure on companies is much less, which encourages more (entrepreneurial) initiatives and the greater taking of risks.

Gwen: What are the three important lessons you believe that young entrepreneurs of today should learn through your experience?
Louis: 1) L’éxécution est la clé. N’écouter personne. Faire est le plus important.
2) Être patient. Il faut du temps pour susciter de l’intérêt.
3) S’amuser. Si vous avez le sentiment de travailler arrêtez tout !

Translation: 1) Execution is the key. Don’t listen to anyone. Doing is the most important.
2) Be patient. It takes time to generate interest.
3) Have fun. If you feel like you’re working, stop everything!
