Exploit Technologies (ETPL), the technology transfer arm of Singapore’s A*STAR, a government R&D agency, has yesterday unveiled five hotspots it intends to focus on to drive the country’s economy to the bleeding edge and create the jobs of tomorrow. The five are: printed electronics, business analytics, bio-imaging, medical diagnostics, and anti-microbials.
These focus areas were picked based on A*STAR’s research strengths, market potential, and its portfolio of patents. Of the five, printed electronics and business analytics could have widespread applications in the web and mobile space. Read more

At 5mm, the A-Drive, a hybrid hard drive developed by A*STAR’s Data Storage Institute (DSI), is one of the world’s thinnest in a 2.5″ form factor. It’s also one of the world’s first — the other being Western Digital‘s hybrid hard drive, which is also 5mm thick. The new drive was unveiled on 1st November to commemorate DSI’s 20 years of research.
The A-Drive, which could be commercialized within a year and retail at USD60, can provide up to 1TB of hard disk drive (HDD) space and 32GB of solid state drive (SSD) space. That’s about 250,000 songs. Read more
China’s top search engine Baidu has announced in a press release yesterday that its new Singapore-based research center has officially opened.
The Baidu-I2R Research Centre (BIRC) is a collaboration with the Institute for Infocomm Research, a research arm of the Singapore’s Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR). Read more
The Singapore Infocomm Technology Federation (SiTF) and Exploit Technologies are jointly launching a Call for Proposal to look for some of the hottest technology startup ideas. Selected proposal may receive up to S$250K (US$200K) in funding and incubcation under SiTF 123JumpStart to implement their ideas.
Requirements:
1. Proposal must include usage of one of A*STAR technologies as listed here:

2. Applicants/Team must have at least 1 fulltime Singapore founder with at least 20% stake in the company/project
3. Each team must have at least 1 technical cofounder
4. Applicants/Team have not received prior government grants
