FlexiRoam, a Malaysia startup that allows customers to make unlimited calls in over 200 countries for a flat rate, has launched their iOS app in Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, and United States.
Previously available only for travelers in Singapore and Malaysia, it looks like the company has been hard at work expanding its customer base, which at last count, numbered at over 2,000. With the surge of smartphones, we are undeniably moving towards a “mobile-first” world. In this space, majority of the mobile companies that took stage on DEMO Asia 2012 aimed to help individual users connect better to the physical world.
Dr Gopi Kudrup, CEO of Telekom Malaysia R&D, highlighted how the prospects of mobile are limitless. However, it was disappointing to see that majority of the startups presented only incremental innovations.
With big players such as Apple having monopolistic power, Arnon Kohavi, Founder of Yarden VC, challenge the general audience to think big. Regardless of where we start our company; a startup should aim to do something disruptive and break existing monopolies.

As the Demo Guru awards were announced at the end of the conference, a sign of life could finally be seen from the audience. To moderate hooting and hollering, the winners walked on stage, smiled and prepared themselves for instant fame. Congratulations to Fiett, dropmyinbox, Sofshell, PixTelz and FlexiRoam.
The biggest winner of the night was Hoiio API, who cannily used their own system to sweep the People’s Choice award.

We followed up with winners to share in their excitement, here’s what they had to say about their experience at DEMO Asia 2012.
Sofshell clearly had the best presentation of the conference and it turns out they have one of the best products as well. The team dared to test their impact protection product by dropping a 12-pound bowling bowl on an iPhone. With their Demo award in hand, the team is looking forward to monitization and “making athletes look sexy and fashionable while being protected.” Read more
