However, Nokia and Symbian still combine for 47 percent of the market, followed by Android at 17 percent, iPhone at 6 percent, and RIM at 1 percent.

For Asia Pacific, InMobi has included Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, and Taiwan.

In Singapore, where smartphones are dominant, iPhones have the majority market share at 44 percent, while Android is second at 31 percent. RIM, Nokia, and Symbian take up only 20 percent combined.

But the iPhone’s lead is slipping. From Q2 to Q3, its market share in Singapore has dropped by 8.1 percent, while Android has gained 4.9 percent.

Overall, mobile ad impressions on the inMobi network have grown by 25 percent to over 69.5B impressions, while impression coming from apps have more than doubled — which is good news for app developers (more statistics on mobile apps in Asia here).

Looking at long-term trends in Asia-Pacific from January 2011, it appears that the iPhone’s market share has been dropping drastically from 16 percent (5M impressions) to 6.3 percent (4.3M impressions).

Android, meanwhile, has grown from 13.5 percent (4.3M impressions) to 16 percent (11.5M impressions), getting into third place behind Nokia and Symbian, who has grown even more dominant.

In Singapore, the iPhone also appears to have taken a beating over the same time frame, falling from 70 percent in January to 44 percent in Q3. Android has grown from 14 to 31 percent.

It should be interesting to see how the release of the iPhone 4S as well as the availability of different price point for different iPhone models will impact market share. We could see some sort of a reversal in Q4.

Nonetheless, while this report is one of the most exhaustive out there, it is unclear how reflective it is of true market share for mobile ad impressions and ownership of handsets.

While it claims to be well positioned to provide an “objective, comprehensive, and representative view of the mobile advertising market”, the impressions are only collected from one source only — inMobi.

That’s despite the fact that numerous mobile ad platforms exist out there, including Google-owned Admob, which is dominant in Android, and Millennial Media.

Sometimes you can’t beat a good name. Take the newly launched iPhone app, Summon Auntie. No, it is not pronounced “sum-muhn” or in IPA lingo “suhm-uhn” – as you foreign tongues might say it – but “sum-mahn” [I would have loved to insert a sample of aforesaid Singlish pronunciation here]. I have seen this app make the rounds amongst my friends, fast.

First, this app aims to help drivers be alerted whenever a parking warden or “parking auntie” is close to the area in which your car is parked. This is so that you can rush back to your car in time if you are over the parking time limit.

However, by no means is this the first parking alert mobile app in Singapore. I covered ParkAlert.me last year.

Second, I believe Summon Auntie’s easy-to-remember name, good UI and Singapore-localized lingo of its app has helped it on its rounds.

Check out some screenshots:

Summon Auntie was released by Singapore-based web and mobile development studio, Replaid, one week ago on Singapore’s National Day as “a gift to all Singaporeans”. One week later, it has seen 1000 cars parked via the app:

The “Alert” feature of Summon Auntie sends out an alert notification to all drivers who have “Parked” their cars within a radius of ~200 metres (650 feet) of your location. What I also like is their Alert History:

Their tagline “Y U NO PANG CHANCE” is a mashup between the “Y U NO” meme and Singlish for “give (a) chance”.

Summon Auntie is not yet available for Android and you can find them on Facebook.

Here you can find some interesting startup news from Indonesia, not only in its capital, Jakarta, but also other their tech startup hubs such as Yogyakarta, Medan, Surabaya, and many more. These listed news are taken from our partner, DailySocial, a leading blog on Indonesia’s tech startup scene.

(1) Tasterous, the location-based app that lets you find and share local dishes, has launched an iPhone version. The company officially launched their Blackberry app in April 2011 and their Android app in June 2011 before finally launch their iPhone app.

(2) Google chairman and former CEO Eric Schmidt announced that the company will open their office in Indonesia before 2012. The announcement was made during his meeting with Indonesia’s vice-president Boediono in Jakarta. The vice-president’s spokesman Yopie Hidayat, as quoted by Kompas, explained that Google would like to develop their business by leveraging SMEs from Indonesia with foreign buyers like what Google did in China.

(3) MediaWave, a social media analysis platform, will continue to make improvements in their platforms, especially on the functions and user interface.

(4) StatCounter, an independent agency that tracks Internet access stats, have a web app called GlobalStats. If we look at the data captured by StatCounter in Indonesia, there was a monumental shift in June 2011. For the first time, accessing the Internet via BlackBerry beat Symbian-based phones.

(5) Internet reach in Indonesia has surpassed traditional media and ranks second only to TV according to a recent survey done by Yahoo! and TNS. The survey was conducted in several major and smaller cities across the country.

(6) A very recent report from Akamai, The State of The Internet report, shows that Indonesia holds 7th position as the slowest country in terms of narrowband connectivity.

The app brings much of the functionality on the Google+ web platform to smartphones.

Features of the app include: Huddle, which allows group chat; Circles, which enables users to categorise contacts into different groups so that different things can be shared amongst them; Stream, which updates the user on what their friends are up to; and Instant Upload, which enables users to upload photos or videos onto the social network (for tips on using Google+, read this).

However, iPad users may have to wait a bit longer to download the Google+ app since it is only accessible on the iPhone for now.

Previously, we reported on how the social network has been rapidly gaining traction among users globally and in Asia, scoring 10 million users at last count. That figure has since ballooned to 18 million, according to Mashable. We also mentioned how businesses have been eager to set up accounts on the network, although Google+ has been embarking on a crusade to remove them.

And according to PC World, Facebook appears to be treating their new competitor seriously now, seemingly responding to the Google+ deletions by launching a “Facebook for Business” page, which contains tips for small businesses on how to use Facebook.

A while back, we reported that a tech blogger discovered some NFC functionality on the Google+ mobile app. Google has also been actively implementing the technology for its Google Wallet and Google Places services.

With our favorite search company placing bets on NFC, it’s no surprise Sony Ericsson wants in on the action. According to Steve Walker, global head of marketing at Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications, mobile payments will be the “first and most obvious” use for his company’s implementation of NFC. Don’t be surprised to see the technology come to life in gaming and entertainment applications either, since that’s how Sony Ericsson differentiates its phone from others.

He adds: “NFC should be universally adopted across all industries. It requires somebody to take the lead. We saw it happening in Japan where mobile payment and ticketing technology was adopted quickly when the government took the lead. Train companies, banks and retailers followed suit. Mobile phone companies are waiting to make the plunge.”

Looks like Steve found his leading man.

Alongside Google, Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications is also a principal member of the NFC forum, a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing NFC technology. The forum boasts sponsor members like MasterCard and Microsoft, and principal members like Intel, PayPal, and American Express (more on membership schemes here).

With other major mobile players like HTC, Samsung, Motorola, and Nokia already producing or about to release NFC-enabled phones (see list of phones), Sony Ericsson is late on arrival, although their arrival at the hot tub party will certainly be welcomed by NFC proponents.

The only party-pooper? Apple. GigaOM has a nice article that documents the rumor mill surrounding whether iPhone 5 will be NFC-enabled, although the author also said that it “makes sense” for iPhone 6, set for launch in 2012, to be the first Apple phone with NFC capabilities. That will put it behind the competition though.

There’s already another 3rd-party Backpack iPhone client: Satchel (listed on 37signals’ Backpack Extras page). Another one, FrontPocket seems to have been discontinued. (Funnily, FrontPocket used to be known as Backpocket.)

A look at geolocation startup Geodelic which may be coming to Singapore soon.

This geek met serial entrepreneur and CEO of Geodelic Rahul Sonnad in San Francisco last month and understood that they may be expanding to South East Asia soon, although details are not announced at this point as discussions are ongoing.

Geodelic’s product GeoGuides beta which was introduced for smart phones last month is an interesting geolocation app where you can instantly turn your venue into an online and mobile app and people can check in, discover interesting services, as well as find friends. Their customers include Clear Channel, with their FLYsmart Airport Guides, and the Santa Monica Convention & Visitors Bureau to engage with consumers in and around their location.

Not your typical startup entrepreneur

Rahul Sonnad

Rahul is not your typical undergrad garage startup dude as he has sold his previous startup “thePlatform” to Comcast and Geodelic has raised more than US$10 million funding from Clearstone Ventures, Shasta Ventures, MK Capital, and just completed their Series B round from Verizon Communications Inc.’s Verizon Ventures group. Geodelic already has existing relationships with Korea Telecom so South East Asia is not far from their reach.

“We feel GeoGuides are at the forefront of an inexorable trend, every business with retail location will need an engaging mobile Internet presence at that physical site. Our GeoGuides platform allows brands to directly connect with consumers—at specific locations, when it is most relevant to them… The race is on to engage and provide value for consumers on location, and Geodelic is offering brands a direct mobile channel to reach their customers.” Geodelic CEO, Rahul Sonnad.

Just in time for the LBS heat

Although location-based services startups have been around for a while, they are only really gaining traction with the proliferation of smart phones with built-in GPS, more notably the iPhone. Geodelic’s business model looks interesting, getting venue owners and managers to launch their location based services for smart phones easily. This geek think their challenge will be to get fast traction with venue owners to have enough good content which will attract users and keep them coming back.

Watch out for more from this startup, especially when they land in this part of the world.
