More than a year after SmartLoans.sg launched, we now have SmartLoans.my – to serve our northern neighbours. SmartLoans is a free-to-use online mortgage comparison platform that enables users to easily search, compare and enquire about home loan packages available across different banks and must be making decent enough progress in Singapore for Vinod Nair, the entrepreneur behind it to expand to Malaysia.

We just got news from Vinod Nair, CEO of The Real Group, the company behind HomeSpace and RentSpace, that the two web properties will be taken down on the 1st of June. The other members of the team who helped make HomeSpace and RentSpace happen are Jarrold Ong, Zhuo Weifeng, Staelen Yew and Timothy Kua.
However, Vinod still has SmartLoans and Textuate to play with. We understand from him that they were unable to generate enough traction with HomeSpace and RentSpace while SmartLoans is doing “pretty well”, and Textuate only recently launched so its progress remains to be seen. Read more
Nearly a year into its launch, Smartloans (previously featured here) has just announced a slew of newly added features to their website. These new features come at a critical time especially since the Singapore government has just announced a new housing loan limit to be applied for all housing loans granted by financial institutions. Home buyers will now only be allowed to borrow a maximum of 80% – down from the current 90%. Since Smartloans earns its revenue by taking a percentage cut of the deals closed by a referral from them, this new ruling does not bode well. Read more
