In early September, we reported on preliminary rulings on the lawsuit between TechCrunch and Fusion Garage. The court dismissed all the motions filed against Fusion Garage, except for the motion alleging breach of fiduciary duty. Michael Arrington finally broke his long silence on the lawsuit to release comments on the case and to release emails claiming to prove that Fusion Garage and McGrath/Power had “planned the entire blowup from beginning till end.” Read more

On August 24, a Californian court issued preliminary rulings on the lawsuit between TechCrunch and Fusion Garage over their collaboration on a tablet device. Of the five motions that were filed against Fusion Garage, all except that of the breach of fiduciary duty have been struck down. Most immediately relevant for Fusion Garage is the squashing of TechCrunch’s demand to sequester proceeds from sales of their JooJoo tablet.
What’s been going on?
In 2008, TechCrunch announced their project to build a low-priced tablet device; two prototypes and six months later, Fusion Garage was brought in to work on the software side of the project. Originally planned for launch end-November 2009, Mike Arrington announced the death of the CrunchPad, claiming that TechCrunch had been booted off their own project. Read more

It has been an exciting week for the Malaysia web/tech scene with the Open Web Asia – Southeast Asia conference happening in Kuala Lumpur on 13-14 July. The TWIA crew hosted a live show with Serkan Toto (@serkantoto) from TechCrunch & Brian Wong (@brian_wong) formerly from Digg and now followFormation as our guests. We touched on some hot topics with great seats about InMobi’s 8M fund-raising success, the feedback about the Open Web Asia Conference and interesting start-ups which caught our eye, how Asian start-ups should improve on their pitching so to attract investors (and Asian investors should be more harsh on feedback to the entrepreneurs here) and Serkan’s interesting prediction for Asian companies in the next few decades. A special treat for all our listeners that you can view the video of the live show here. You can go directly to TWIA website or listen the podcast here in SGEntrepreneurs. You can watch the This Week in Asia Live Show Video from Satoo.TV. Read more

Back to the studio after an exciting week from Echelon 2010 and the good news that we are recently mentioned on TechCrunch. Akky Akimoto, the founder of Asiajin.com is here with us this week as our special guest. The week could not have been better without Apple’s announcement of the iPhone 4 and another massive showdown between Apple & Google/Admob in mobile advertising. How do those events affect Asia? While Gree, Japan’s number 2 mobile social network is now casting its attention to US and China markets, how about Zynga who is turning their guns to India and China? If you think Google TV is really new, why not find out what has been happening between web and TV in Asia here, and finally, the Geeks on the Plane have declared Silicon Valley is just a state of mind & dying, is Asia really coming of age? 90 sounds like the score you get on a primary school quiz. Well, it apparently also is the number of pre-orders Fusion Garage had for their flagship tablet, the Joo Joo.
What seems to be a development of the legal wrangle between Fusion Garage and TechCrunch has just exposed the extremely low numbers of pre-orders for the device. When we first talked about pre-sales with Chandra of Fusion Garage, I imagined numbers in the 5 or 6 digit range. Now I know better. Read more
