Female entrepreneurs are rare. According to the New York Times, only eight percent of American venture-backed tech startups in 2010 were founded by women. The most common explanation given is that women are generally unwilling to bet all that she has on something that contains high risk, knowing at the back of her mind that she has other traditional heavyweight roles to fulfill such as raising families.

Secret {W} Business, an organisation connecting like-minded women to fulfill their budding entrepreneurial dreams, will be launching its very first Speed {W} Networking session titled “After Hours” 2.0 at SpeakEasy, a wine bar. This event will involve girls meeting each other one at a time for a short interval of two minutes and then moving on to the next person in line.
Kara Bensley, founder of WYLD Agencies (a platform for Asia Pacific brands to be discovered), will also be sharing her tips for entrepreneurs in Singapore. Read more

Project Inspire: 5 Minutes to Change the World is a joint initiative by the Singapore Committee for UN Women and MasterCard to help young changemakers create a better world of opportunities for women and girls in the Asia Pacific, the Middle East and Africa.
Launched in 2011 in celebration of the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day and the 25th anniversary of MasterCard in Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa, Project Inspire presents 18-35 year olds with a five minute platform to pitch their ideas to the world.
The proposals must demonstrate its impact in the lives of women and girls across Asia Pacific, Middle East, and Africa through entrepreneurship. Read more

Twitter is not just a tool to broadcast but is one that connects people globally. Twittamentary is a documentary that explores how lives meet and affect one another on the fast growing micro-blogging phenomena that is Twitter. Directed by Singaporean filmmaker and entrepreneur Tan Siok Siok, Twittamentary will be presented in a special beta screening next Monday. This screening is part of the final round of beta screenings in Asia, Europe and the USA before a premiere later in the year. Set up in May 2008, Doinky Doodles showcases Handmade Art that has been creatively made from an assortment of earth friendly recycled fabrics. The result is original, nifty and fun pieces of art that visitors will find hard to resist.
Xin’s aim of setting up Doinky Doodles is to let people connect easily with art by making it more affordable and handy to use, as opposed to the classic notion of only owning pieces that are sold in galleries. Read more

When Borders first arrived on Singapore shores in 1997, it exposed us in Singapore to the potential of bookstores as a social focal point, and more importantly it showed us how bookstores could appeal to the masses and still cater to those who love the printed word with highly knowledgeable staff and a massive collection of book titles.
14 years on, the company in the US has filed for bankruptcy and while Borders Singapore is owned independently by RedGroup Retail (themselves in Voluntary Administration), the reverberations of Borders US’ failure has triggered discussions about the sustainability of physical bookstores in general, and megastores in specificity, especially with digital books and hardware like the Nook, Kindle and iPad being convenient reasons for the issues faced by Borders US.
